Keep it Between The Lines
When I left Tallahassee to move to Pensacola my family and I began to have different sayings or things well say to each other as a kind of “see ya later”. Some are goofy but they each stuck with me in different ways. My grandfather (bless his heart) is such a character and we have the saying “keep it between the lines”.
Ironically this came from when we were talking about what happened to my motorcycle and why I laid it down. Had a Yamaha FZ6R and rolled it 6 months later. Now I was riding, don’t get it twisted, I just got caught with a little too much dip on my chip. From that conversation on we always say to each other to keep it between the lines.
At that time, it always meant keeping it in the lines on the road. Nowadays, I’ve been applying it to all aspects of life. Think about life like an infinite-lane highway. Everyone has their lane and just like regular driving you gotta keep it between the lines.
This saying has been coming five fingers to my face pretty regularly and I’m pretty regularly reminded to remain in my lane. I get reminded when I jump into others' conversations sometimes, when I’m trying to give my opinion, and even when I’m trying to go too big on my snowboard.
Keeping it between the lines became something more than “just keep the car on the road son”. It became to remain focused on my destination in life and mind my business. Are you someone who needs to work on keeping it between the lines?
